Constructed from silk fabric waste and hand-spun silk fibres, the piece is naturally dyed with indigo and finished with an intuitively constructed crochet mesh outer layer. The result is a fluid interaction between sea, silk, and skin.

Inspired by the sensory calm of remote coastal places, particularly Wilson’s Promontory (Yiruk/Wamoon), the traditional lands of the Gunaikurnai and Bunurong/Boonwurrung peoples, this project responds to a longing for presence and reconnection with nature. It transforms internal states into tactile forms, using the language of waves, foam, and sunlight to evoke emotion and memory.

The project speaks to broader sustainability concerns by shifting focus from guilt-based messaging to emotional resonance. It explores how personal attachment, and story can add value to textiles, encouraging slower, more considered relationships with clothing.

Every element of the piece reflects an ethos of care and resistance to fast fashion. Hand-spinning, natural dyeing, and crochet are slow, intentional processes that celebrate artisanal skill and tradition. The materials: recycled silk and biodegradable dyes further support a circular and mindful approach to making.
